1. PRISONS

The fact that poverty is among our greatest social challenge, we find that most of the people in prisons are those that cannot afford to pay for Advocates to represent them in court. Therefore, they are forced to go and represent themselves despite the fact that they are totally unaware of the law process. We therefore have our weekly visits to prisons within Nairobi.  Some of the Prisons we go to are Industrial Area Men’s Prison, Lang’ata Women Prison and Kamiti Maximum Prison. This year we have added two more Prisons on our list of visits which are Jamuhuri Park Prison for people with short sentences and Nairobi West Men Prison for those tendering their appeals in court. During our visits we give legal advice to the remandees with regard to their cases and also take up matters that call for our dire attention. This year we also began having seminars in Prison where we get to have a big group instead of the one on one interview we normally conduct. During the seminar we pick an area of the court process and teach them on it.

At times some people wonder why we need to have such visits to prisons or to even represent such people. But we at CLEAR we have seen injustice first hand and are overwhelemed to see the number of people in prisons with charged with crimes that they did not commit. We been able to represent some of this people and have had most of them acquitted of their cases which is always a joy to us to help them reunite with their families

2. WALK-IN CLIENTS

By the end of everyday the Number of Walk-in Clients we get is overwhelming reminding us just how much still needs to be done.  Fortunately we have some Advocates who we can refer  some of the pro bono cases we get. The only challenge is the fact that there are still many of them these clients and so for some the best we can do for them is give then advice or draft for them the legal documents required especially in civil matters.
