NAIROBI THIS WEEK -COURT ROUND-UP

We had 20 matters in courts within Nairobi. We had one children matter in regards to custody and Maintenance, 3 rulings, one defence hearing, two mentions, 11 hearings with two of them starting afresh and one acquital. Among the cases we handle were:

We also had acquittals one on Friday the previous week. Fridah Makena had been charged with stealing but the students who were witnesses in the case did not turn up and she was therefore acquitted under section 202 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Another acquittal was for William Asoka also charged with steal. This was done on Friday this week.

This week we resumed visits to all the prisons. On Tuesday we went to industrial area where we gave legal aid to the prisoners. On Wednesday we visited the Kamiti Maximum Prison and conducted a seminar on conducting defence and effective cross examination. We really couldn’t handle the whole crowd and so we requested that the seminar would have people who had been recently arrested and charged. On Thursday, we went to Lang’ata Women’s prison also for legal aid. Out of all these visits we now have more matters that we plan to work on.

This week we had 25 walk in clients all seeking assistance on both civil and criminal matters. We were able to assist all of them either by giving them legal advice and for others we took up their matters to act for them.
